A New War Front in Africa

President Obama is rapidly becoming George W. Bush on steroids.  This week’s announcement that 100 military advisers would be going to Uganda to assist in operations against "The Lord’s Army" surprised even pessimists like myself who have been watching the growing militarization of the foreign policy being conducted White House.  "The Lord's Army" threatens no conceivable US national interest.

Obama is also demanding that the United Nations’ International Atomic Energy Agency release classified reports that apparently suggest that Iran is developing technologies that might be applicable to the creation of a nuclear weapon.  This comes on top of the revelation of an alleged plot by Iran to kill the Saudi Arabian Ambassador in Washington, a tale so Byzantine that hardly anyone believes it who is not attached to the White House.  Obama’s objective in going hard after Iran is difficult to discern as the United States does not need more complications in the Middle East and the nature of any threat coming out of Tehran is somewhat elusive.

Reports this weekend also indicate that there have been more predator strikes in Yemen, one of which killed the son of Anwar al-Awlaki.  The execution of the elder al-Awlaki has disappeared from the news but many continue to be concerned by the extrajudicial killing of an American citizen.  The White House has stated that it will not discuss the matter any more and has indicated that it will not reveal the evidence that led to the killing by drone.

Back in 2008 it would have seemed unlikely that electing President Obama would lead to an increase in violent conflict around the world, but that is precisely what has happened.  Obama apparently likes what he sees when he employs the military to resolve every conflict.  If he is doing it because it makes him appear strong and more electable that is despicable because it means he is killing American soldiers and thousands of foreigners to shore up his own political fortunes.  If he is doing it because he thinks it is the right thing to do then it is time to change whatever advisers are feeding him this nonsense.
