The Stock Market Crash of 1929 began the long plunge into the Great Depression. Previous economic depressions had usually lasted no more than three years, so why did this one last so long?

Historians often denounce President Herbert Hoover for doing nothing to stop the depression while praising President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s efforts to ultimately end the depression. They are wrong on both counts. The main reason why the depression lasted so long was because of  the failed interventionist policies of both Hoover and Roosevelt.

Can you depend on common sense from the government?

Consider the following headlines from recently reported events:

·      Police shut down lemonade stand run by two little girls

·      SWAT team raids Amish farm for selling milk straight from the cow

·      Federal Bureaucrats fine Missouri family $4 million for son’s sale of $4500 worth of rabbits

In the most important judicial decision in U.S. history, the Supreme Court empowered itself to be the final authority on the legality of government activity. This shifted the balance of government power to the judiciary, upset the federalist system envisoned by the founders, and enabled federal courts--consisting of unelected officials--to dominate public policy through their rulings.

Building a railroad across America was a remarkable engineering feat. However, the alliance between corporations and government that built the railroad set a precedent for the wasteful and corrupt mismanagement of taxpayer money that flourishes today.

Last week, the Iowa House Transportation Committee passed House File 2048 (HF 2048) on a 15-6 vote, clearing it for debate on the House floor (as HF 2214).

The bill would bar cities and the state from installing automated traffic camera systems that record speeders and red-light runners and then issue tickets automatically by mail. It also requires the removal of such systems from the eight cities where they are already in place.
