Campaign for Liberty Chairman Ron Paul issued the following statement supporting the amendment offered by Senators Brian Schatz (D-HI) and Rand Paul (R-KY) to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) of 2021. The Schatz-Paul Amendment prevents local police departments from obtaining military weapons like grenade launchers, tanks, and armed drones.

“Arming local police officers with the weapons of war encourages them to act like an occupying force and treat American citizens as enemy combatants. This not only leads to incidents of police violating the rights of American citizens but undermines the very foundations of a free society. Therefore, I am happy that my Campaign for Liberty is working to mobilize grassroots liberty activists in support of the bipartisan Schatz-Paul Amendment prohibiting local police from obtaining offensive military weapons.”

The who oppose the militarization of the police should contact their U.S. Senators and urge them to support the Schatz-Paul Amendment to the NDAA. You can find contact info for your senators here.

In any other “normal” year, many of us would be gathering with family and friends this weekend to celebrate the Easter holiday. But this is anything but a normal year.

Back in 1916, the Irish chose Easter as a time to rise up against British oppression and proclaimed themselves a republic -- a daring move inspired by a desire for liberty.

This Easter in the United States of America, rather than an occupying one, we face a government that is becoming more and more oppressive daily through the coronavirus crisis and stripping away our liberties every step along the way.

Thomas Jefferson famously said, “Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty.” That does not only mean that we should be prepared to defend against foreign invaders. Perhaps more importantly it means that we must retain the lessons from the original American and Irish revolts and guard against a government that views the people as the enemy.

Americans are told they must stay in their homes. They are told they cannot assemble for religious reasons. Their businesses are forced to shut down because the government deems them “non-essential.” Those who speak out are criticized profusely. Government officials are advocating for the right to hold those arrested without a hearing or bond.

One hundred years ago, a young writer Randolph Bourne said, “war is the health of the state,” and he lamented governments' success at taking authority and resources during conflict. But Bourne further explained that, “if the State's chief function is war, then the State must suck out of the nation a large part of its energy for its purely sterile purposes of defense and aggression. It devotes to waste or to actual destruction as much as it can of the vitality of the nation.”

The “war” we face today is not against foreign enemies, but rather on American soil against our own government as they seek more and more power, and as they suck out the vitality of our citizens.

The actions being taken benefit the special interests. They benefit the statists whose “expertise” is leading to disaster. They benefit the mainstream media. They benefit the wealthy.

The government is using the threat of this virus to further gut our First, Second, Fourth, Fifth, Sixth, Seventh, Eighth, Ninth AND Tenth Amendment rights. All under the guise of “keeping us safe” from the threat du jour.

The state uses their power to take away our freedoms. If we wish to survive as a free society, we must begin to exercise some of that “eternal vigilance” Jefferson spoke of against an ever more oppressive state -- and that is exactly what we intend to do. If the people demand change, the politicians will listen.

These are truly somber times.

But please don’t forget this Easter and Passover holiday, like this time of year, is about renewal and freedom.

I hope that you have a peaceful weekend and are able to spend some time with your loved ones.

For liberty,

For many millions of Christians, Easter is a time to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Others may celebrate the arrival of spring and the promise of new life. Whatever one’s beliefs, after several weeks of mandatory “stay at home” orders and the complete shutdown of the US economy over the coronavirus, this self-destructive hysteria must end and we must reclaim the freedom and liberty that has provided us so much opportunity as Americans.

To do that we should first understand that much of the hysteria is being generated by a mainstream media that has long prioritized sensationalism over investigating and reporting the truth. Government bureaucrats are also exaggerating the threat of this virus and appear to be enjoying the power and control that fearful people are willingly handing over to them. One “coronavirus” bureaucrat even told us that we can no longer go to the grocery store! So we should just starve?

It is certainly possible to believe that this virus can be dangerous while at the same time pointing out that radical steps are being taken in our society – stay-at-home orders, introduction of de facto martial law, etc. – with very little knowledge of just how deadly is this disease.

On March 24th, the CDC issued an alert stating that doctors should classify “probable COVID-19” or “likely COVID-19” as Covid-19 deaths. Perhaps that explains the seeming drop-off of pneumonia deaths this year and the simultaneous spike in Covid-19 deaths as some researchers have reported.

The BBC reported last week that, “At present in the US, any death of a Covid-19 patient, no matter what the physician believes to be the direct cause, is counted for public reporting as a Covid-19 death.”

Does that sound like a scientifically sound way of determining how deadly Covid-19 really is?

What is most dangerous is that although this virus will eventually disappear, the assault on our civil liberties is not likely to be reversed. From this point on, whenever local officials, county officials, state governors, or federal bureaucrats decide there is sufficient reason to suspend the Constitution they will not hesitate to do so. Anyone who challenges the suspension of the Constitution “for our own good” will be labeled “unpatriotic” and perhaps even reported to the authorities. We have already seen hotlines springing up across the country for Americans to report other Americans who dare venture outside to enjoy the sun and build up their vitamin D protection against the coronavirus.

The government is justified in canceling the Constitution, we are told, because we are in an emergency situation caused by the Covid-19 virus. But do people forget that the Constitution itself was written and adopted while we were in an “emergency situation”?

Did the framers of the Constitution fail to add an 11th Amendment to the Bill of Rights saying, “oh by the way, none of this counts if we get sick”? Of course not! Those who wrote our Constitution understood that these rights are not granted by the government, but rather by our Creator. Thus it was never a question as to when or under what conditions they could be suspended: the government had no authority to suspend them at all because it did not grant them in the first place.

Our country is far less at risk from the coronavirus than it is from the thousands of small and large authoritarians who have suddenly flexed their muscles across the country. President Trump would do well to end this ridiculous shutdown so that Americans can get on with their lives and get back to work.

Americans should remember the tyrants who locked them down next time they go to the ballot box. Let’s demand an end to the shutdown so we can resurrect our economy, our lives, and our liberties!

Campaign for Liberty Chairman Ron Paul issued a statement regarding recent revelations that the FBI has potentially been spying on domestic organizations, including Campaign for Liberty.

CATO Institute scholar Patrick Eddington submitted a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, asking whether the bureau had ever conducted warrantless surveillance on a number of pro-civil liberties groups, including Campaign for Liberty. The FBI's response was that it could “neither confirm nor deny” that they have been spying on Campaign for Liberty. In Mr. Eddington's professional experience, such a denial from the government typically means the affirmative.

Dr. Paul — “The idea that the FBI would target Campaign for Liberty for surveillance should outrage every American. Our work to educate, train, and mobilize grassroots activists for the cause of limited government and individual liberty is precisely the type of activity the Founders were most interested in protecting when they added the First Amendment to the Constitution.

“The FBI has so little regard for American’s constitutional rights that they refuse to even give a straight answer when asked if they are, or have ever, subjected Campaign of Liberty to any form of surveillance.

“Campaign for Liberty will continue to work to pressure Congress to do their duty and uncover the truth about FBI spying on us and other organizations and rein in all rogue federal agencies that violate our liberties in the name of keeping us safe.”

On Saturday, June 1, Texas. Gov. Greg. Abbott signed the bill banning red light cameras in Texas.

Abbott said he was motivated to support the bill for several reasons: "No.1, privacy concerns. We think that the right to due process matters," he told FOX7. "You have the right to face your accuser in court."

This effort was led by C4L leaders in Texas who received help from C4L coordinators in Arizona who have been pushing for a red light (s)camera ban across the country for years.

Automated Ticketing Machines (ATMs), more commonly known as speed or red light cameras, are popping up on street corners across the country, but thanks to C4L grassroots activists, the trend is changing.

The ATMs are sold to the public by greedy city councils and state legislatures as a way to reduce collisions or moving violations. What they’re really doing is lining corporate pockets and city treasuries with money from the fines, while making roads and intersections more dangerous.

ATMs, which are owned and operated by private corporations (often from out of state or foreign countries), capture images of the license plate of a vehicle supposedly running a red light or traveling over the speed limit. The owner of the vehicle later receives a ticket in the mail, even if he was not the one driving at the time.

Red light cameras bring in millions in revenue for the cities that use them as well as the corporations that own them. The corporation, instead of police, charges citizens with a crime. Victims of this “taxation by citation” scheme pay the fine to the camera company, and the spoils are then shared with the city.

The shocking disregard for due process is apparent, all to prey on motorists and line the pockets of the city and the camera companies. Millions of dollars are being extracted from U.S. motorists and millions of those dollars leave the state where the fine was issued.

Studies have shown increases in accidents, including dangerous intersection collisions that occur immediately following the installation of speed or red light cameras. The tickets issued by these ATMs, and the kangaroo court system set up to process them, violate your constitutional rights to due process and equal protection under the law.

Even worse, another tactic the camera vendors use to make their programs profitable is manipulating speed limits and signal timing. Yellow light times are lowered to dangerously short intervals, causing erratic driving and an increase in accidents. Motorists are left with the choice of slamming on their brakes to avoid a ticket or passing through the intersection a fraction of a second after the signal moves from yellow to red and being fined $50, $100, $200, or even $500 in some cities.

Top employees of Redflex have been convicted of fraud and bribery in Chicago and other locations. Redflex and other camera vendors buy off and lobby politicians, brokering backroom deals to enrich themselves at the expense of your liberty.

When the public learns the truth about the steep fines and increase in accidents, as well as the backroom deals that brought the fraudulent ATMs to their city, the backlash is immediate.

ATM’s have been struck down in court in multiple states and banned in several others. Violations of due process, equal protection, and wrongful prosecution are among the many reasons given. Manipulation of yellow light times has been uncovered in multiple states, brought before judges, and when proven, resulted in millions of dollars in refunds.

Campaign for Liberty county and state groups have been waging an organized fight against these scameras and have won many battles nationwide. Red light cameras in dozens of cities have been removed, and refunds of fraudulent photo tickets have been received. It hasn’t been easy to go up against the camera profiteers, but our grassroots activists have been successful in passing outright bans or using existing law to end the camera programs in 28 states and countless cities.

Campaign for Liberty Chairman Ron Paul's new book, The Revolution at Ten, is a great read. One can learn more about economics, politics, history, and the philosophy of liberty from this 130-page book than from most lengthy academic works.

Starting with the early legal codes protecting individual rights to the Magna Carta, the American Revolution, and the movement toward liberty in the 19th century, Dr. Paul discusses how America abandoned the philosophy of limited government, free markets, and non-interventionist foreign policy in the 20th century. Dr. Paul explains how liberty was lost as progressives gained control over the government, began constructing a welfare state at home and a warfare state abroad. The progressive's crusade to use state power to "perfect" America and the world was facilitated by the twin mistakes of 1913 – the creation of the income tax and the Federal Reserve.

Dr. Paul then recounts the rise of the rEVOLution in 2008 and 2012. While the media proclaims it is dead, Dr. Paul sees it as still growing as support for the ideas of Liberty continue to grow and the failures of progressivism become more obvious.

The unifying theme of the book is that we are in the last stages of the progressive era and what replaces it depends in large part on how successful we are in getting a critical mass of people to embrace liberty and join our movement.

Dr. Paul covers the major challenges facing us, including foreign policy, civil liberties, the “deep state,” climate change hysteria, and, of course, monetary policy and the Federal Reserve. My favorite chapter is on cultural marxism. Dr. Paul ties the “social justice warrior” crusade to censor all speech they deem offensive to the progressive goal of destroying civil society in order to use government power to exercise total control over individuals.

The last two chapters of the book compare the libertarian society with one governed by "progressive" values and looks at the chaos that could come from the collapse of the Keynesian welfare-warfare state. Dr. Paul is optimistic that a free society can emerge after the next crisis. I share Dr. Paul’s optimism. Dr. Paul’s predictions should inspire us to redouble our efforts to work to grow the liberty movement and force the plot and to change course before an economic crisis leaves us no other choice.

This is one of those books you likely will want to buy multiple copies of — one to keep for yourself and several to give to both those in need of a quick introduction to the ideas of liberty, and those already involved in the movement who could use something to inspire them to get up the fight.

Remember, if you join Campaign for Liberty's Patriot Club before October 24, you will be entered into a drawing to win one of ten autographed copies of Dr. Paul’s new book. You can join here.

Last week Attorney General Jeff Sessions ordered federal prosecutors in drug cases to seek the maximum penalty authorized by federal mandatory minimum sentencing laws. Sessions’ order represents a setback to the progress made toward restoring [...]

Last week Attorney General Jeff Sessions ordered federal prosecutors in drug cases to seek the maximum penalty authorized by federal mandatory minimum sentencing laws. Sessions’ order represents a setback to the progress made toward restoring compassion and common sense to the sentencing process over the past few years. Sessions’ action also guarantees that many nonviolent drug law offenders will continue spending more time in prison than murderers.

Sessions’ support for mandatory minimums is no surprise, as he has a history of fanatical devotion to the drug war. Sessions’ pro-drug war stance is at odds with the reality of the drug war’s failure. Over forty years after President Nixon declared war on drugs, the government cannot even keep drugs out of prisons!

As was the case with alcohol prohibition, the drug war has empowered criminal gangs and even terrorists to take advantage of the opportunity presented by prohibition to profit by meeting the continued demand for drugs. Drug prohibition enables these criminal enterprises to make profits far above the potential profits if drugs where legalized. Ironically, the so-called “law-and-order” politicians who support the drug war are helping enrich the very criminals they claim to oppose!

The war on drugs also makes street drugs more lethal by incentivizing the creation of more potent and, thus, more dangerous drugs. Of course, even as Sessions himself admits, the war on drugs also leads to increased violence, as drug dealers cannot go to the courts to settle disputes among themselves or with their customers.

Before 9/11, the war on drugs was the go-to excuse used to justify new infringements on liberty. For example, laws limiting our ability to withdraw, or even carry, large sums of cash and laws authorizing civil asset forfeiture were justified by the need to crack down on drug dealers and users. The war on drugs is also the root cause of the criminal justice system’s disparate treatment of minorities and the militarization of local police.

The war on drugs is a war on the Constitution as well. The Constitution does not give the federal government authority to regulate, much less ban, drugs. People who doubt this should ask themselves why it was necessary to amend the Constitution to allow the federal government to criminalize drinking alcohol but not necessary to amend the Constitution to criminalize drug use.

Today, a majority of states have legalized medical marijuana, and a growing number are legalizing recreational marijuana use. Enforcement of federal laws outlawing marijuana in those states is the type of federal interference with state laws that conservatives usually oppose. Hopefully, in this area the Trump administration will exercise restraint and respect state marijuana laws.

Sessions’ announcement was not the only pro-drug war announcement made by the administration this week. President Trump himself, in a meeting with the president of Columbia, promised to continue US intervention in South and Central America to eliminate drug cartels. President Trump, like his attorney general, seems to not understand that the rise of foreign drug cartels, like the rise of domestic drug gangs, is a consequence of US drug policy.

The use of government force to stop adults from putting certain substances into their bodies — whether marijuana, saturated fats, or raw milk — violates the nonaggression principle that is the bedrock of a free society. Therefore, all those who care about protecting individual liberty and limiting government power should support ending the drug war. Those with moral objections to drug use should realize that education and persuasion, carried out through voluntary institutions like churches and schools, is a more moral and effective way to discourage drug use than relying on government force.

Be careful if you are doing math in Oregon without an engineering license . . . even if you are an engineer. Or you may be fined by the Oregon State Board of Examiners for Engineering and Land Surveying.

That is what happened to Mats Järlström. After his wife got a ticket issued because of a red light camera violation, Mr. Järlström did a study of yellow lights at intersections with red light cameras.

Mr. Järlström, who holds a degree in electrical engineering and has worked at technical jobs both in the U.S. and his native Sweden, examined the mathematical formulas used to set the intervals between light changes at intersections with red light cameras. His research showed that the intervals were too short and were endangering human life. Hmmm . . . almost makes you think that these cameras have more to do with increasing goverment revenues than with protecting driver safety.

Mr. Järlström's research received attention in local and national media -- including an appearance on CBS's 60 Minutes. So, of course, his findings were welcomed by the local authorities who pledged to work to address the problems he identified . . . right?

Not exactly. Instead of fixing the flaws in red light cameras, the State of Oregon has been busy prosecuting Mr. Järlström for practicing engineering without a license. You see, even though he has a degree in engineering, Oregon does not consider him an engineer because he does not have an engineering license. And, even though he did his research on his own time and not for pay, Oregon has determined that his research amounted to practicing engineering without a license.

Mr. Järlström is challenging Oregon in federal court, where he is being represented by the Institute for Justice.

Campaign for Liberty's state groups are leading the fight against red light cameras and have been successful in rolling back these cameras in many instances. Please support our efforts.

In my best movies of the year and my comments on the Presidential inauguration I addressed the cult-like atmosphere surrounding President Obama. I thought that Obama-worship could not reach new heights of absurdity than this...but I was wrong.

Saturday Night Live--which used to be an "equal opportunity mocker"-- closed out its last show of the Trump years with a little tribute to Obama. SNL cast members Ceclily Strong and Sasheer Zamata, standing behind a photo of President Obama sang "To Sir with Love" and announced they got a special gift for Obama, a "World's Best President" mug.

The choice of song is revealing. To Sir with Love is the theme of a 1967 movie of the same name about a teacher who turns around the lives of his class of juvenile delinquents. Here is a sample of the song's lyrics:

The time has come
For closing books and long last looks must end
And as I leave
I know that I am leaving my best friend
A friend who taught me right from wrong
And weak from strong
That's a lot to learn
What, what can I give you in return?

Unlike the singers in the video linked above, Strong and Zametra are not children, but adults. Yet their choice of a song shows they have a childlike view of Obama as an all-wise teacher whose job is not to head the Executive Branch but to set the people on the right course and help us resolve all our difficulties.

This worshipful attitude toward the President is dangerous to liberty. After all, if the President is an all-wise, benevolent teacher then why should he (or she) be bound by the chains of the Constitution?
