The Program for International Assessment (PSA) recently released its 2022 assessment of the math and reading skills of students from over 200 countries. This is the first assessment since 2018 and it provides more evidence that schoolchildren were damaged by the COVID hysteria. American students’ math scores were lower than 27 of the 38 members of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). The other OECD countries do not have any reason to celebrate, as the average math scores of students in all OECD countries declined by 17 points.

American students’ reading scores “only” declined by one point since 2017 – as compared to an 18-point average decline amongst all OECD countries. However, the National Assessment of Education Progress national report card recently reported a historic decline in reading among 18 years old.

While the drastic reductions in reading and math across the globe can be attributed to the COVID panic, Americans’ scores have been declining for years. The lockdowns are a symptom of the problems with the American education system. The real problem is that progressives have seized control over government schools. These progressives are more concerned with indoctrinating children than providing them with a quality education.

Progressives seek to control education because they understand that those who are indoctrinated as children will likely support progressivism as adults. It is no coincidence that progressive control of education and the decline of quality of the nation’s schools coincide with increased federal control.

Progressive federal bureaucrats used the promise of funding to entice states and local governments to surrender control of schools to federal educators. Wokeness is just the latest iteration of the progressivism that has been undermining America’s free-market economy, constitutional government, and all sources of authority — including parents and churches — outside of the federal government for over a century.

Ironically, the lockdowns may have set back the woke progressives by giving parents an opportunity to see how wokeness had infiltrated their children’s education. Wokeness is also suffering a backlash because of the claim that the only reason anyone could object to allowing a biological male to compete in athletic events with biological females is bigotry.

The backlash against woke education has led to parents showing up at school board meetings and/or running for school boards themselves to fight the woke agenda. The combination of lockdowns and wokeness are also causing many parents to explore alternatives to government schools, including homeschooling.

Parents looking to provide their children with a quality home-based education that promotes real learning and does not push a political agenda – but does instruct in the history and philosophy of liberty – should look into my homeschooling curriculum. My curriculum provides students with a well-rounded education that includes rigorous programs in history, mathematics, and the physical and natural sciences. The curriculum also provides instruction in personal finance. Students can develop superior communication skills via intensive writing and public speaking courses. Another feature of my curriculum is that it provides students the opportunity to create and run their own businesses.

The government and history sections of the curriculum emphasize free-market economics, libertarian political theory, and the history of liberty. I encourage all parents looking at alternatives to government schools — alternatives that provide children with a well-rounded education that introduces them to the history and ideas of liberty without sacrificing education for indoctrination — to go to RonPaulCurriculum.com for more information about my homeschooling program.

Just before leaving town for Christmas break, the US House gave Americans a last-minute holiday gift: a nearly trillion dollar military spending bill filled with lots of goodies for the special interests and the military-industrial complex. Unfortunately, the rest of America got nothing but coal in its stockings.

With Constitutionalists like Rep. Thomas Massie on the House Rules Committee, Speaker Johnson made the unusual move of bringing the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) under suspension of the rules, which bypasses the Rules Committee but requires two-thirds of the House to pass the bill.

Considering that Speaker Johnson tossed into the “must-pass” bill yet another extension of Section702 of the FISA Act, it’s unsurprising that he wanted to rush the bill through without the possibility of amendment. Section 702 allows the government to intercept and retain without a warrant the communications of any American who is in contact with a non-US citizen. It is clearly a violation of the Fourth Amendment which is supposed to protect Americans against unreasonable searches and seizures.

Section 702 was “legalized” under President George W. Bush during the “War on Terror” after it was revealed that Bush was using the National Security Agency to illegally spy on Americans. We were told at the time that government must be granted these authorities because we were under threat from terrorists. It would just be a temporary measure, we were promised, and then the authority would expire. That was fifteen years ago and here we are re-authorizing the government to continue to violate our liberties.

As with the rest of the violations of our civil liberties after 9/11, like the PATRIOT Act and the creation of the Department of Homeland Security and the TSA, the federal government soon turned its terrorism-fighting tools inward, targeting Americans rather than foreigners who we were told wanted to harm Americans. That’s why the FBI’s so-called domestic terrorism watchlist continues to expand to include Christians and those skeptical of big government.

So rather than debating whether we want a government more like East Germany than the one our Founders imagined, Section 702 was tossed into the military spending bill.

The NDAA also contained a $600 million gift to the corrupt government of Ukraine. As opposition to further spending on Ukraine’s failed war with Russia increases in the House, Republican leadership decided to add what may be the last parting gift to the military-industrial complex. As with most foreign assistance, however, Ukraine will likely see very little of this money. Most of it will be laundered through the military contractors and lobbyists who line every corner of the Beltway.

The NDAA also pushes us further toward confrontation with China, authorizing more than $100 million to train Taiwan’s military and a further nine billion dollars to continue sending US military ships to harass China in its backyard.

I believe Speaker Johnson is intelligent, with a bright future in House leadership. He has inherited a broken system and a legislative body that operates without any guiding principles. I sincerely hope he will begin to listen to the increasing voices in the House who are questioning the warfare-welfare state. We are more than 33 trillion dollars in debt, with interest payments on that debt dwarfing all other government spending. A crash is coming. There is no time for more “business as usual.”

President Biden recently repeated the claim that high prices are caused by greedy businesses. Biden is not alone in trying to gaslight the people into thinking price inflation is rooted in the actions of private individuals and not the fiat money system Americans have lived under since 1971. In the media we see excessive consumer spending on luxury items, for example, being blamed for continued price inflation. The fact is that increased consumer demand can only cause prices to rise in those sectors of the economy subject to the increased demand. Prices increasing across the economy are always the result of the Federal Reserve’s conduct of monetary policy.

Trying to minimize the harm of inflation, some people in government and media will insist that, while many prices for goods are higher than they were pre-lockdown, they are still lower than were prices in the 1990s when you consider that the quality of these goods has increased. The argument is that buyers are getting higher value today than 30 years ago. Of course, any increased quality is because of market-driven innovation. If America had a free-market monetary system, instead of central bank-controlled fiat currency, prices would drop as quality increases.

It is also important not to ignore the fact that the Federal Reserve’s devaluation of the dollar’s purchasing power creates an incentive for individuals to spend money as soon as they receive it and a disincentive for them to save. This is because the dollar will have less value a year from now than today. Therefore, high levels of spending are a rational response to an irrational fiat money system.

High prices and supply shortages were inevitable after the lockdowns. However, prices would have adjusted back more if the Federal Reserve had not pushed interest rates to zero. While the Fed has raised interest rates, it has not raised rates to anywhere near where they would likely be in a free market. In fact, rates are not at historically high levels, yet many worry the Fed’s rate increases are pushing the economy toward a recession. This shows how addicted Americans are to the Fed’s “easy money,”

When the dollar’s purchasing power erodes, workers will seek higher wages. This is why periods of high price inflation are accompanied by strikes and other types of union activity aimed at increasing wages. This has made unions another popular scapegoat for price inflation when the truth is that Fed-caused price increases are the real reasons behind labor unrest.

Sadly, the increase in nominal wages gained by the recent series of strikes is unlikely to keep up with the declining real wages resulting from the Federal Reserve’s assault on the dollar’s value. This is why, contrary to the claims of many progressives, working people are the victims, not the beneficiaries, of price inflation. As a Texas union official once told me, “gold has always been the friend of the worker.” This makes sense because gold is money whose value cannot be manipulated by the central bank.

Inflation is the act of money creation by the Fed, and high prices are a symptom of inflation, not a cause, and not the fault of greedy business, consumers, and unions. The Federal Reserve is also the engine of the welfare-warfare state. Therefore, to restore a system of limited government, individual liberty, and free markets, Congress must cut spending and audit then end the Fed.

Over the weekend Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin explained to the American people what’s really wrong with US foreign policy. Some might find his conclusions surprising.

The US standing in the world is damaged not because we spent 20 years fighting an Afghan government that had nothing to do with the attacks on 9/11. The problem has nothing to do with neocon lies about Iraq’s WMDs that led untold civilian deaths in another failed “democratization” mission. It’s not because over the past nearly two years Washington has taken more than $150 billion from the American people to fight a proxy war with Russia through Ukraine.

It’s not the military-industrial complex or its massive lobbying power that extends throughout Congress, the think tanks, and the media.

Speaking at the Reagan National Defense Forum in California’s Simi Valley, Austin finally explained the real danger to the US global military empire.

It’s us.

According to Secretary Austin, non-interventionists who advocate “an American retreat from responsibility” are the ones destabilizing the world, not endless neocon wars.

Austin said the US must continue to play the role of global military hegemon – policeman of the world – because “the world will only become more dangerous if tyrants and terrorists believe that they can get away with wholesale aggression and mass slaughter.”

How’s that for reason and logic? Austin and the interventionist elites have fact-checked 30 years of foreign policy failures and concluded, “well it would have been far worse if the non-interventionists were in charge.”

This is one of the biggest problems with the neocons. They are incapable of self-reflection. Each time the US government follows their advice into another catastrophe, it’s always someone else’s fault. In this case, as Austin tells us, those at fault for US foreign policy misadventures are the people who say, “don’t do it.”

What would have happened if the people who said “don’t do it” were in charge of President Obama’s decision to prop-up al-Qaeda to overthrow Syria’s secular leader Assad? How about if the “don’t do it” people were in charge when the neocons manufactured a “human rights” justification to destroy Libya? What if the “don’t do it” people were in charge when Obama’s neocons thought it would be a great idea to overthrow Ukraine’s democratically-elected government?

Would tyrants and terrorists have gained power if Washington did NOT get involved? No. Tyrants and terrorists got the upper hand BECAUSE Washington intervened in these crises.

As Austin further explained, part of the problem with the US is democracy itself. “Our competitors don’t have to operate under continuing resolutions,” he complained. What a burden it is for him that the people, through their representatives, are in charge of war spending.

In Congress, “America first” foreign policy sentiment is on the rise among conservatives and that infuriates Austin and his ilk. He wants more billions for wars in Ukraine and Israel and he wants it now!

And our economic problems? That is our fault too. Those who “try to pull up the drawbridge,” Austin said, undermine the security that has led to decades of prosperity. Prosperity? Has he looked at the national debt? Inflation? Destruction of the dollar?

There is a silver lining here. The fact that Austin and the neocons are attacking us non-interventionists means that we are gaining ground. They are worried about us. This is our chance to really raise our voices!

New US House Speaker Mike Johnson struck a blow for liberty and justice last week when he finally authorized the release of all the tapes from the January 6, 2021 “insurrection.” We were told by no less than President Biden himself that this was the “worst attack on our democracy since the Civil War.”

The FBI was unleashed by the Biden Administration to hunt down hundreds of participants in this “insurrection” and lock them up in the gulag where they awaited trial in torturous conditions – many in solitary confinement.

A Congressional Committee was set up under then-Speaker Nancy Pelosi to “get to the bottom” of the “Trump-led insurrection.” It did not include a single Representative nominated by the opposition Republican Party, but rather two “Republicans” – Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger – who could be relied on by Pelosi and the Democrats to toe the line.

In short, the whole thing was an old-fashioned Soviet show trial, where the evidence was kept secret and the pre-determined verdict – guilty – was to be used to tighten the grip of the ruling regime and intimidate any further dissenters into silence. The message was clear: “speak out against the ‘perfection’ of the 2020 election and you may find yourself in the gulag along with the insurrectionists.”

It was terrifying and profoundly anti-American.

And, as we finally can see for ourselves thanks to Speaker Johnson, it was a huge lie. The new video shows demonstrators shaking hands with police officers once they entered the Capitol Building. They were welcomed into the building by officers who even held the doors for them to enter! They had no way of knowing that they would soon be rounded up and locked away.

Does that mean no crimes were committed on January 6th? Not at all. The tapes already released were carefully chosen to single out examples of violence and other possible criminality. But the full release of the tapes demonstrates beyond a doubt that the endless propaganda that this was a coordinated attempt to overthrow the government was false.

And as for that violence and mayhem on January 6th? How much of it was instigated by undercover FBI agents? New footage clearly shows officers outside the building firing on protestors with no warning. That must be why, in hearing after hearing, Biden Administration officials like Attorney General Merrick Garland have refused to tell Congress the number of federal agents present and their roles in instigating violence.

The release of this evidence should immediately result in the release of all non-violent protestors awaiting trial or serving their sentences. Those in power responsible for promoting this lie should take their places in the jail cells.

This delayed justice will not help protesters like Matthew Perna, however. Though the new video release clearly shows him calmly walking inside the Capitol in the presence of unconcerned police officers, when Merrick Garland’s Department of “Justice” announced they would seek terrorism charges against him, Perna, in despair, decided to hang himself in his garage.

Yes, there was an insurrection of sorts. Those in power hated Donald Trump so much that they were willing to torture and even murder their fellow Americans to keep him from the presidency. Unless these people are brought to justice, we will have no Republic left to defend.

On Wednesday, Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) plans to hold a cloture vote on the “compromise” infrastructure spending bill in the U.S. Senate. The bill is projected to authorize at least $1.2 trillion on infrastructure funding. This is in addition to the so-called “human infrastructure” bill Democrats hope to pass under reconciliation with a price tag topping $3.5 trillion. The bills will use infrastructure funding as a means of starting the transformation to a “green economy.”

The language of the compromise bill is still being negotiated, so Schumer plans to put up a shell bill for cloture and then amend it with the bipartisan compromise language when the negotiations are finished.

Expect to find federal spending to “encourage” state and localities to adopt red light scameras, facial recognition technology, license plates readers, and other tools to invade your privacy in the legislation. There may also be a “study” of a mileage tax.

You can read about the dangers of a mileage tax here and here.

The House already passed an infrastructure spending bill, HR 3684, the “INVEST in America Act,” by a vote of 221-201. Brian Fitzpatrick (PA-01) and Chris Smith (NJ-04) were the only Republicans to vote for the bill, which was supported by every Democrat.

One part of the House bill that is causing some controversy is a change to the way federal infrastructure funds are distributed. The House bill adds complexities to the application procedure for state and local governments to receive transportation funds. The purpose of this is to “encourage” them to spend more on public transportation and other “green” projects and less on highways. States traditionally have spent the majority of funds on highways, which makes sense since most people prefer traveling by car rather than by bus or subway, but the green movement wants to force people out of their cars and onto buses, subways, and bike trails.

This provision has understandably generated opposition from state and local governments who object when Congress puts strings on federal funding. It has also generated opposition from the General Association of Contractors, since a lot of their members are heavily involved in highway construction.

Some progressive House members are threatening to blow up the infrastructure deal unless immigration reform is added to the forthcoming “human infrastructure” bill that the Senate intends to pass under reconciliation, which means they only need 51 votes.

While the House can put immigration in the bill, there’s a good chance it would be stripped out by the Senate Parliamentarian for not falling within the parameters of what is proper to include in a reconciliation bill.

Before moving to the second infrastructure bill, both the House and Senate will likely attempt to pass a budget. The Biden administration recently unveiled a $6 trillion budget plan.

Several weeks ago, the House snuck a provision into a rule “damming” the funding levels available for the Appropriations Committee at $1.5 trillion. This enabled the Appropriations Committee to set their spending numbers for each subcommittee so they can get to work on this year’s spending bills.

The Appropriations Committee passed all of their spending bills during the recent committee work period.

You can read the Appropriations Committee Subcommittee allocations here.

Note that, despite Republican cries about how the Democrats are under-funding the military, the Defense Subcommittee’s allocation dwarfs the allocations for every other subcommittee, except for Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education—and that is only because the Labor, HHS, and Education appropriations allocations contains the “mandatory” funding for Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. Take that out and Defense appropriations spending allocation is larger than Labor.

Campaign for Liberty will continue fighting all attempts to increase spending and instead, work for real cuts right now. Please support our efforts.

The big events of the week both took place off of the floor. First, on Tuesday, the Senate Rules Committee held a markup of S. 1, the Senate companion to H.R. 1, the Legalized Election Theft bill. This act codifies many of the most disturbing practices of the 2020 election. It also imposes new regulations on groups like Campaign for Liberty. These regulations are designed to stop us from informing you of where your elected representatives stand on key liberty issues so you and other pro-liberty Americans can pressure them to support liberty.

The Senate mark-up lasted almost 9 hours. A few amendments making small technical changes passed, but most amendments were defeated on party line votes.

The final vote was a 9-9 party line vote (since the Senate has equal numbers of Democrats and Republicans, there are an equal number of Democrats and Republicans on the committee). This would normally mean the committee cannot move the bill to the Senate floor. However, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer is determined to bring the bill to the Senate floor, and there are ways he can get around a committee’s refusal to pass a bill. It is important we keep the heat on the Senate. So please sign your petition to the Senate against H.R. 1/S. 1. You can find the link here.

The big event in the House was a vote to remove Wyoming Representative Liz Cheney from her position as Chair of the House Republican Conference. Many Republicans supported her removal for her vote to impeach President Trump in January and her continuing attacks on him, which is considered divisive and a distraction from opposing President Biden’s agenda. Libertarians should cheer Cheney’s removal from GOP leadership. The daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney is truly a “chip off the old block” in that she never saw a war she did not like or a liberty she would not restrict in the name of the “war on terror.”

Cheney, who has always been a promoter of the idea that the president has nearly unchecked authority in foreign affairs was one of the leading proponents of a provision in last year’s National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) limiting the president’s ability to withdraw troops from Afghanistan. So, in Lynn Cheney’s bizzarro world, presidents can send troops around the world at will but need Congress' approval to end war. Cheney also violated the (unspoken) rule against GOP incumbents openly supporting a primary challenge to a GOP incumbent when she supported a primary challenger to leading liberty champion Representative Thomas Massie.

Cheney's actions against Massie show how devoted she is to squashing any opposition to the neoconservative position that we must wage endless wars and sacrifice our liberties to be safe from terrorism. The January 6 incident was likely just an excuse to break with Trump and pose as the upholder of decency against the cult of the orange man.

Now, Cheney is a media darling and can use her “martyrdom” to rally and mobilize pro-war, anti-liberty “Never Trumpers.”

Unfortunately, Cheney’s replacement as conference chair, Elise Stefanik (NY-21), shares Cheney’s hawkish foreign policy views.

Stefanik is also a proponent of unconstitutional government surveillance. She voted against the Massie-Lofgren amendment forbidding the use of taxpayer dollars to carry out warrantless wiretapping under Section 702 of the USA PATRIOT/FREEDOM Act. She also voted against the USA Rights Act, which would have rolled back the surveillance state.

So, the war hawks and snoop state boosters will still have a prominent place in the leadership of the GOP.

Campaign for Liberty will continue to mobilize pro-liberty Americans to roll back the surveillance state and obey the constitutional limits on government power in all areas—including foreign policy.

Campaign for Liberty Chairman Ron Paul issued the following statement on the death of conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh:

“Carol and I extend our deepest sympathies to Rush Limbaugh’s family, friends and many fans. While I had disagreements with Rush on foreign policy and civil liberties, I appreciate his defenses of economic liberty. Rush introduced millions of Americans to sound economic principles and the dangers of big government policies like ObamaCare. Rush did this both through his own broadcast and by having my late friend Walter Williams as a regular guest host. Rush’s unfailing good humor and his constant optimism should serve an example of how to effectively spread the message of liberty.”

Libertarian educator Tom Woods famously quipped that “no matter who you vote for you end up with John McCain.” Unfortunately Woods was proven right for about the thousandth time this past week, as Washington again showed us that it is all about war.

First, we learned that if Joe Biden ends up in the White House next month he intends to put a deep state member of the military-industrial complex in charge of the Pentagon. General Lloyd Austin will be only the second Defense Secretary in decades to require a special Senate waiver to serve in that position. Gen. James Mattis under President Trump also needed a waiver, as he had been out of the military less than the required seven years before becoming Defense Secretary.

But the revolving door between active military service and civilian leadership of the Pentagon is perhaps less troubling than the revolving door between the military-industrial complex and leadership of the Defense Department.

As the first African-American to take charge of the Pentagon, the Austin pick is celebrated as a great victory for “diversity.” However, if we move beyond the color of a person’s skin, Biden’s selection is not all that diverse. Gen. Austin was head of the US Central Command under an Obama Administration that launched a brutal war on Libya under false pretenses and pursued a regime-change policy in Syria that involved arming and training jihadists. Upon retirement, as is all too common with military leaders, he cashed in on his service with a position on the board of military contractor Raytheon.

Austin will be “business as usual” for Washington’s warmongers and the military contractors who make a fortune inventing endless conflicts overseas.

Then things went from bad to worse, as the yearly monstrosity called the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) was passed with an amendment severely restricting the US president’s ability to remove troops from Afghanistan and Europe. Offered by neoconservative Congresswoman Liz Cheney, daughter of the warmongering Dick Cheney, the amendment all but guarantees that America’s longest war in history will continue pointlessly onward.

A coalition of warmongering Democrats and Republicans have been furious with President Trump for his last minute effort to draw troops down from Afghanistan and elsewhere, and they appear to have a veto-proof majority to tie the president’s hands.

Congress has for decades believed that the president can go to war whenever or wherever he pleases without a declaration, but if the president dares attempt to end a war their belief in a “unitary executive” is thrown out the window. What hypocrisy.

The Constitution is clear that the president is the commander in chief of the military and as such should have the authority to move troops as he sees fit. The Founders understood that 535 Members of Congress trying to micromanage troops on the battlefield is not a good idea.

Congress has it backward. It should be very difficult for a president to take the country to war and easy for that war to be ended.

Time after time, the “peace” candidate usually wins the election. But no matter how sick the American people are of endless war, the war machine finds a way to keep chugging along. What will it take to return to a policy of peace and prosperity?

The U.S. House and Senate are in session for as long as it takes to wrap up business for the year. As of this writing, there is still not a deal on a Fiscal Year 2021 Omnibus Appropriations bill, but the two sides are said to be close to an agreement. The House and Senate will likely pass a short-term funding bill keeping the government open until December 18 later this
week.

Negotiations also continue over a possible coronavirus relief bill. Last week, a “bipartisan” group of senators and representatives unveiled a $908 billion coronavirus spending proposal. The figure is designed to split the difference between House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s $2 trillion+ proposals and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s “skinny” $500 billion relief bill.

The compromise appears to be gaining support and could achieve majority support of both chambers of Congress, especially as more cities and states reimpose draconian lockdowns, increasing unemployment and economic anxiety.

Speaker Pelosi has indicated that she would support folding the coronavirus spending bill into the omnibus, but so far, neither the Senate nor the Trump administration have backed that approach.

Congress will also consider the Fiscal Year 2021 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). President Trump has threatened to veto the bill over a provision that would rename military installations currently named after Confederate military leaders and the fact that the bill does not modify the “big tech” companies’ legal liability in place under Section 230 of the 1996 Communications Decency Act. The House and Senate may have the votes to override a presidential veto.

The NDAA authorizes $740.5 billion in military spending. It also authorizes a new “Pacific Defense Initiative,” aimed at countering Chinese influence in the region. The initiative will increase the U.S. military footprint in the Pacific and is just one of several measures aimed at China. The NDAA also includes several measures aimed at increasing the new cold war with Russia, including military aid for the Ukraine.

In a move designed to throw a monkey wrench into President Trump’s stated desire to withdraw troops form Afghanistan, the NDAA requires presidential assessment of the risks before withdrawing substantial numbers of troops. The bill also forbids the withdrawal of U.S. Troops from South Korea.

At a time when the U.S. deficit is skyrocketing -- thanks largely but not entirely to the spending on coronavirus packages -- it would seem to make sense to cut back on foreign spending. It would also seem to make sense not to try to prolong America’s longest war.

It makes no sense to keep trying to start two new Cold Wars with China and Russia. This is especially true given that China holds large amounts of U.S. debt and is already moving to challenge the U.S. Dollar’s world reserve currency status. But our political, economic, and media elites’ refuse to abandon the idea that the U.S. should run the world.
