Politico is reporting the Justice Department released memos today on a Bush-era "gun walking" operation known as "Wide Receiver" conducted between 2006-2007. Eric Holder made the documents public in response to a subpoena for documents on "Operation Fast & Furious" by Rep. Darrell Issa.
It's clear this is simply an attempt by Holder and the DOJ to suggest their actions are less criminal than they appear since a precedent of gun walking existed from a previous administration. In reality, what it really shows is a long trail of abuse of power by career bureaucrats working at the BATFE, made worse by a complete lack of oversight and accountability by two Presidential administrations.
What makes this more offensive is the continued gun walking operations eventually led to the death of U.S. Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry in 2010 with weapons that can be directly traced back to "Operation Fast & Furious."
Politico writes:
His killing first brought the tactic of gun-walking to broad attention, and subsequent investigations showed that investigators lost track of thousands of firearms purchased in the U.S., many of which crossed the border into Mexico.
It's time for accountability in Washignton, and the first step is for Eric Holder to resign immediately.
