As if Americans needed more proof they have been stripped of all their human dignity in order to move freely about the country, this latest incident from the TSA is just icing on the cake.
An Indianapolis man was traveling with his grandfather's ashes from Orlando when he had his encounter with a Transportation Security Officer:
"They opened up my bag, and I told them, 'Please, be careful. These are my grandpa's ashes,'" Gross told RTV6's Norman Cox. "She picked up the jar. She opened it up.
"I was told later on that she had no right to even open it, that they could have used other devices, like an X-ray machine. So she opened it up. She used her finger and was sifting through it. And then she accidentally spilled it."
Gross says about a quarter to a third of the contents spilled on the floor, leaving him frantically trying to gather up as much as he could while anxious passengers waited behind him.
"She didn't apologize. She started laughing. I was on my hands and knees picking up bone fragments. I couldn't pick up all, everything that was lost. I mean, there was a long line behind me."
While the TSA has yet to respond to this specific incident, after having seen enough of there stock responses it will probably sound something like this:
"The TSO's actions in this instance were an isolated incident and the agent involved has been sent back for more training. These actions are not reflective of the broader agency which always seeks to conduct itself in a respectable manner."
Unfortunately, as Americans should have realized by now, this is not an isolated incident. Nor are the other near weekly stories reported from across the country where poorly-trained screeners abuse their position over ordinary, law-abiding Americans, simply seeking to exercise their right to move freely about the country, unimpeded by government sanctioned thugs.
We're told 9/11 changed everything. Perhaps it did, and sadly so. For a once proud people who valued the principles of freedom and liberty above all else, the change in our psyche has been sharp. The government wants you to behave like a nation of sheep, frightened of your own shadow and believing you are incapable of defending yourself. Many were happy to acquiesce.
Dwight Eisenhower is often quoted as saying, "If you want total security, go to prison. There you're fed, clothed, given medical care and so on. The only thing lacking... is freedom."
That's the tradeoff Americans have been asked to make since 9/11, and it's time to stand up and boldly reject it.
Americans are not prisoners within Fortress America, relying solely on the government for their protection. We come from a heritage of free people. Of individuals, willing to face hardship and struggles head on and to not back down in the face of danger.
The government can't keep you safe. It's time to reclaim our dignity as Americans, and more importantly, as human beings, by demanding an end to the TSA!
