NO GAS TAX HIKE -- JUST FIX OUR ROADS
Whereas: Michigan pays by far the highest prices for auto insurance in the nation; and
Whereas: Michigan already pays among the top tax rates on gasoline in the nation; and
Whereas: Raising the gas tax 45 cents per gallon would make Michigan drivers pay by far the highest taxes on gas in the nation; and
Whereas: Michigan cannot afford to be by far the most expensive place in America to drive a car; and
Whereas: Michigan roads are already being repaired at a record $4.2 billion this year -- a full billion dollars more than just four years ago; and
Whereas: Michigan’s comeback depends on our ability to attract people to a state where life is affordable; and
Whereas: Michigan’s budget, as proposed variously by the governor, the House, and the Senate, all contain tens of millions of dollars in pork-barrel earmarks and unprecedented and unnecessary additional new spending for our self-sustaining public universities.
Therefore, We the People of Michigan call upon you to oppose any state budget that uses tax hikes, fee hikes, or state debt refinancing to raise new revenue from our state’s present or future taxpayers.
