Two Important Amendments to Senate Farm Bill

Two important amendments to the Senate's omnibus Farm Bill, S. 3240, could come up for a vote as early as Tuesday evening, and I hope C4L members will take action to advance them.

The first is Senate amendment (S.A.) 2220, which would exclude the definition of industrial hemp under marijuana and allow the cultivation of industrial hemp to be permitted and regulated under state programs.

This amendment mirrors the language of H.R. 1831, the Industrial Hemp Farming Act, first introduced by Congressman Ron Paul.

The second amendment of interest is S.A. 2180 allowing the interstate sale of raw milk. This amendment mirrors the lannguage of H.R. 1830, the Milk Freedom Act, also introduced by Congressman Ron Paul.

The raw milk amendment faces fierce opposition from the National Milk Producers Federation and the International Dairy Foods Association, both of whom ignore recent research done into the potential health benefits of raw dairy and instead chose to focus their opposition on the claim that over a thirteen-year period, from 1993-2006, there were 73 "outbreaks" of food-borne illnesses from unpasteurized dairy products.

Please take a moment today to contact your senators and urge them to support these important amendments, S.A. 2220 and S.A. 2180, to the Farm Bill!
