Interning at C4L: A Dream Come True

By: Michael Clayton

As an intern at Campaign for Liberty, I have gained the tools and connections I need to jump start a career in the liberty movement. To say that working for Dr. Ron Paul is a dream come true would be an understatement. Working for Dr. Paul has exceeded all of my expectations and has put me on the path to a successful career in politics. Not only have I learned the ins and outs of grassroots lobbying, but I have been able to experience an organization full of great people who have dedicated their life to the betterment of our great nation.

When starting college and attempting to decide what I wanted to do with my life, the only thing I really knew was that I wanted to help others. I figured, what better way to do that than to educate others on the importance of liberty!?!? I was introduced to Dr. Paul by my father prior to his run for President in 2008, and his message immediately caught my attention. He is without a doubt my hero, and I still have a hard time believing that I work for such an inspiring man.

In my time at Campaign for Liberty I have gained valuable experience in many areas that will be of great use throughout my career. This internship IS NOT about running errands and prepping coffee for people that will never give you the time of day. IT IS about learning the complexities of an extensive political mailing system, being an integral part of a nationwide candidate survey program, helping run the annual Liberty Political Action Conference, writing blogs that are posted on the C4L website for thousands to see, being a personal representative for the organization at congressional hearings and briefings, helping to gain cosponsors for federal legislation, and so many other wonderful things. The staff at Campaign for Liberty personally reaches out to you to ensure that you are making the most of the opportunity.  Will you answer phone calls and lots (and I mean lots) of emails? Sure, but you also get a firsthand perspective of the positive momentum that is building within the liberty movement.

Of course, the most memorable moment that I have had as an intern with Campaign for Liberty is the personal time that I got to spend with Dr. Paul himself. At LPAC 2013, Dr. Paul requested a personal meeting with me and the other intern prior to his big speech. In what is likely the most surreal moment of my entire life, I found myself sitting across the table from my hero, answering questions about myself! I was floored that such a popular figure did not want to sit and boast about his accomplishments, but wanted to know more about me and my story. Once again, Dr. Paul had exceeded my expectations, as I felt more like I was talking with my grandfather than a past presidential candidate.

Overall, interning with Campaign for Liberty has been the highlight of my life to this point. After graduating from college last May, I was applying for every conservative political internship available. Without a doubt, Campaign for Liberty was my first choice, because I knew they aligned with my political beliefs more than any other organization out there. I never thought in a million years I would be able to say that I work for Dr. Ron Paul. Now I have the experience and the connections I need to move on to the next step in my political career, and more importantly, to advance the cause of liberty. I will forever be thankful for the people at Campaign for Liberty for believing in me and providing me the opportunity to chase my dreams.
