Glenn Jacobs: Defunding ObamaCare is serious business
In case you missed it, here is Glenn Jacobs’ op-ed from the Chattanooga Times Free Press on why Senator Bob Corker and other establishment Republicans should join Campaign for Liberty in fighting to defund ObamaCare.
Don’t miss your chance to hear Glenn Jacobs and other great speakers at this year’s LPAC.
Recently, Tennessee Sen. Bob Corker said that Utah Sen. Mike Lee’s proposal to defund Obamacare was “a silly effort.” Protecting individual liberty and economic freedom is anything but silly. It is serious business.
Corker, along with Tennessee’s other senator, Lamar Alexander, prides himself on working with Democrats to keep the federal government running effectively. However, simply keeping the government humming along and making sure the trains run on time should not be the ultimate goal of conservative Republicans. Their goal should be limiting the size and scope of the government.
As Barry Goldwater — whose failed 1964 presidential campaign still launched the modern conservative movement — said, “I have little interest in streamlining government or in making it more efficient, for I mean to reduce its size.”
Obamacare will be a disaster for the economy. It will result in higher taxes, more government spending, lower full-time employment, and a “crowding out” of the private sector in the health care industry. Overall, the result will be a decline in the quality and availability of health care as competition and other market forces are eliminated.
In addition, Obamacare represents an enormous risk to privacy as individuals who enroll in the program will be forced to turn over personal information such as medical records, Social Security numbers, tax information and bank account data.
Finally, under Obamacare, health care will end up being another entitlement program, resulting in even more dependency on the federal government.
Although Obamacare is now on the books, there are still ways to resist its implementation. Since Congress controls the federal purse, one way would be for Congress to refuse to provide funds for the program as Lee proposes.
If Congress were to assert its fiscal authority, it could mean a confrontation with Obama. Many congressional Democrats would fight such a measure tooth-and-nail. Already we hear hysteria about a potential government shutdown.
Such histrionics are overblown.
Many polls — including Rasmussen Reports, FOX News, CBS News, ABC News/Washington Post, NBC News/Wall Street Journal and Gallup — show that the majority of Americans disapprove of Obamacare. If Democrats were to play the game of political brinkmanship, it could easily backfire as they attempt to implement an unpopular program by any means necessary.
Unfortunately, confrontation is anathema for moderates such as Corker. Compromise is his watchword.
While compromise is often called the art of politics, compromise is the reason the country is in this deplorable state. Unlike our personal dealings, in which compromise usually means both sides get something positive out of the deal, political compromises often benefit politicians at the expense of the rest of us. Whatever political favors the Democratic and Republican establishments get out of Obamacare will leave a majority of middle-class Americans holding the bag.
Instead of defending the principles of freedom on which our nation was founded, constant compromise has incrementally undermined these principles.
Unfortunately, too many Americans believe that those who stand on principle are “obstructionists” and causing “gridlock.” If we are to change the direction of our country, we must change this attitude and demand that politicians defend our liberties and freedoms above all else–not simply keep the government running smoothly at any cost.
Demanding that our representatives in Congress refuse to fund Obamacare would be a great place to start.
